Adventures in Atlanta

Mississauga Valley's own ERIC MATTO, ROSEMARY BRKOPAC and PHIL TAYLOR attended the Toastmasters International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia this past August. Here are Rosemary's thoughts on this event:

Phil, Eric and Rosemary share lunch at a restaurant in the convention hotel

I was thrilled to attend the annual conference in Atlanta last month and find myself amongst 1,300 other welcoming and enthusiastic Toastmasters!
The conference was a  jammed packed 4 days full of both educational and social functions. However, three events stand out as highlights for me:

l The Golden Gavel luncheon honoring Mrs. Debbi Fields Rose founder of Mrs.
Fields Cookies.  This was an unforgettable event honoring the phenomenal
achievement of this exuberant woman. Mrs. Fields' mantra is "GOOD ENOUGH NEVER IS".  Dessert at the luncheon was a supersized chocolate chip cookie (Mrs. Fields, of course!) with mounds of cream and berries piled on top. A great finish to a truly inspiring luncheon!

l I will always remember the Hall of Fame ceremonies where Voice of the
Valley received the International Top Ten Newsletter Award.  The award was presented to me by GAVIN BLAIKEY, 2002-03 Toastmasters International President.
What made the event truly special was that it was attended by what seemed
like all the Toastmasters at the conference! When the award was announced the crowd responded with such overwhelming enthusiam and appreciation I was
truly take aback.  I wish I had the event on tape! [Editor: a picture of Rosemary receiving her award from Gavin was published in last month's newsletter]

Phil Taylor, Rosemary Brkopac & Eric Matto at King's tombl A visit to Reverend Martin Luther King's Tomb, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change was the unexpected highlight of the trip for me.  The visit was especially significant as it occured on the 40 anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King's delivery of the  "I Have a Dream Speech" .  This speech, of course, was a turning point for social change in the United States.  Thanks very much to ERIC MATTO and PHILIP TAYLOR for spending this wonderful afternoon with me!

Club News

If you haven't paid your dues yet to Treasurer BRIAN DAVIES, please get them to him as soon as possible. You don't want to let your membership lapse and miss out on all the fun!

Our September 9 meeting had eight (!) guests. Awesome.

We've had a couple of meetings without scheduled speakers. At one, we had an extended Table Topics session on "What's Your Beef". At another, there were two educational sessions: ERIC MATTO presented "How to Be a Distinguished Club" and JOE VANDERKOOI presented "Say a Few Words: A Quick Guide to Impromptu Speaking".

Welcome to new member VICTOR VARMA. If the name sounds familiar to some of you, it's because Victor is a former member who has come back to rejoin Mississauga Valley.
