Editor's Note

October is Toastmasters Month! It was on October 22, 1924 that the very first Toastmasters club organized by DR. RALPH SMEDLEY met at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California. That club still exists today as Smedley Number One Club #1-F in nearby Tustin, CA, and every meeting has an empty chair with a picture of Dr. Smedley on it as inspiration. Since that humble beginning 79 years ago Toastmasters has become an international organization with more that 190,000 members in 9,300 clubs in 80 countries around the world.

Celebrate Toastmasters Month by attending club meetings and bringing a guest, wearing a Toastmasters pin in public, going to the District conference, or telling your family, friends and co-workers about the benefits of Toastmasters membership! Come to think of it, why not make every month Toastmasters month?

From the President

Hello everyone! October and almost Halloween! I hope everyone will be at that meeting (Oct. 28). LINDA KANE has agreed to chair this one and it will be a good time, as Linda has a great sense of humour and makes sure that we all have lots of fun.

The first steps in the Table Topics and Humourous Speech contests are over. We are very proud of JOE VANDERKOOI who won the Area 22 contest in Table Topics and went on to win second place in the Division P contest. Next step will be at the District conference, and we wish the winners at Division P much success.

Congratulations to ERIC MATTO who has earned his CTM for the third time. We have about 5 others who are approaching this milestone for the first time, and I am looking forward to hearing their speeches as well as the good news that they have earned their CTMs. I'd like to be presenting a CTM badge every month! The number of CTMs we get is important to our status as a Distinguished club. We have one ATM Silver so far this year, which is me, and we would like to see ATM Bronzes or Silvers earned by at least three other members.

We are busy now with a Speechcraft workshop at the Distress Centre of Peel. This is an annual event. I am a volunteer at the Centre, and work with the staff to make this happen. It is a good experience for us as Toastmasters, as we become the "experts" and impart our knowledge to the participants. This session runs for 8 weeks in total and will end on November 20. Thanks so far to JOE VANDERKOOI, TAM DANG, EVELIN DEMELLO and ERIC MATTO for their contributions in making this a success.

Finally, don't forget about our Christmas party to be held on December 16, 2003 at my home. We will be talking to you about this very soon. It will be a potluck dinner, with games and (of course) Santa.

Believe and Achieve!

CAROL CROUSE, Club President

Club News

Welcome to our newest member STACEY SCHROEDER, who submitted his application and dues to the club on Oct. 21. Stacey visited the club twice, and decided that Toastmasters is what he needs to improve his communication skills. Welcome Stacey, we look forward to helping you grow!

batsBoys and ghouls, be sure to attend our Halloween-themed meeting on October 28. LINDA KANE will be the Chair that night, and she promises to bring a collection of costumes with her so that we can all get in the mood. You're more than welcome to bring your own costume if you like. Linda is asking for members to show up a little earlier than usual that night so that we have time to get ready, and would also like people to bring Halloween goodies if they can.

At our September 30 meeting we were honoured to be visited by LORI-ANN JAKEL, our Area 22 Governor. Lori-Ann gave us an update on the upcoming speech contests, and was an active participant in our meeting.

Our October 7 meeting was "Fishbowl Night". Members showed up that night and drew their meeting assignments not from a fishbowl but an envelope. Trading was allowed, and the meeting then proceeded. Not only a lot of fun, this meeting also illustrated that Toastmasters are prepared to fill in at the last minute in whatever role they're needed in.

Our Club is mentioned in the October issue of The Toastmaster magazine. The Hall of Fame starting on page 28 has a section showing the Top Ten Club Newsletters in the world for 2002-03, and Voice of the Valley is shown there with the name of last year's Editor ROSEMARY BRKOPAC. Rosemary's account of her trip to the International Convention in Atlanta to receive her award is in our September 2003 issue.

Member News

ERIC MATTO has achieved his CTM (Competent Toastmaster) level for completing the 10 speeches from the Basic Manual. Eric has already achieved his DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster) and happens to be celebrating his 16th anniversary in Toastmasters this month, and this is his 3rd time going through the Basic Manual. Since his DTM came before the last change to the educational program, Eric's goal is to complete a second DTM under the new program.

Send us your news to put here as well. We'd love to hear about what our members are up to. Perhaps you'd like to share how something you learned at Toastmasters has helped you in your professional or personal life?
