Editor's Note

GoalHere it is January, and we are well into the second half of our Toastmaster year already! This is a good time to review your goals for the year and see what progress you've been making. If you haven't done as much as you had planned to so far, you can still make adjustments to achieve your goals by June 30. Our President CAROL CROUSE has set our club's theme for this year to be "Believe and Achieve", and if you believe that you can accomplish something then you are well on your way to achieving it.

Open House - Feb. 3

Our Club's Open House, planned for January 27, 2004, has been rescheduled to February 3 because of the weather. This meeting will be structured like a regular meeting with the theme of "Importance of Communication". All members are encouraged to invite guests to come to this meeting so that they can see firsthand what membership in Toastmasters is all about.

Contests!

Despite the wintry weather, the Spring 2004 speech contest season is upon us. Mississauga Valley Toastmasters will be holding our club speech contests on February 24.
ribbons
There are two different contests for the spring. One is the International Speech Contest, which is a 5 to 7 minute speech on any topic, open to any Toastmaster member who has given at least 6 manual speeches at the club level. The other contest is Evaluation, similar to evaluations given at the club except all contestants evaluate the same target speaker. Timing for this is 2 to 3 minutes, and it is open to all members.

Participation in these contests is optional, but we hope that many of you will consider competing as a way of stretching yourselves and building up your speaking skills. Club members not competing can help out the club contest in other ways, as we'll need judges, timers, ballot counters, etc.

Club News

Our club continues to pick up new members! This month we welcome our newest additions, LISA NAGY and LILY SUNG. Lisa is the wife of current member ROBERT POPE, and Lily has been a guest several times before who finally decided to join.

Mississauga Valley Toastmasters will be listed in the first ever Chinese Mississauga Community Services Directory. 4000 copies of this directory will be distributed to Chinese residents within the community. This is a great opportunity for us to spread the word of Toastmasters into new areas. If you know of any other free places where we can get listed, please let us know.

Member News

ERIC MATTO recently vacationed on the island of St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles. While there he contacted the Philipsburg TM club about visiting them at a meeting. Even though they were shut down because of the Christmas / New Year break, he was invited to meet informally with several club members at the bank where they worked.

They meet on Thursday nights at 6:45pm at the Meadowvale Library in the Meadowvale Town Centre. If you know someone looking for a club in that area, let us know and we'll provide the club's contact information.
