This year has had many challenges
for our club. The relocation (to City Hall) made it harder for
people to find us, but we have had lots of guests and new
members.
It is time to start thinking about next
year! We will be doing short presentations at the club
on the Club Officer roles and it is time to think
about reaching out, stretching yourself, and becoming a member of
the Club Executive. The Nominations Chair is JOE
VANDERKOOI, and he will be in touch with you soon. You can
make the job easier for Joe if you let him know now that you want to
be on the Executive!!
The Executive is an important part of
any club, and it is a challenge!
We will be moving
back to Burnhamthorpe Community Centre as soon as the renovations
are complete (estimated to be in early July). Notices will be
provided as soon as we know.
Don't forget about the BIG EVENT
in April, District 60's Spring Conference: International
Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest, along with great workshops,
and wonderful speakers!

Mississauga Valley Toastmasters
will be holding our club speech contests on February 24.
There are two different contests for the
spring. One is the International Speech Contest,
which is a 5 to 7 minute speech on any topic, open to any
Toastmaster member who has given at least 6 manual speeches at the
club level. The other contest is Evaluation,
similar to evaluations given at the club except all contestants
evaluate the same target speaker. Timing for this is 2 to 3 minutes,
and it is open to all members. While we would like members to let us
know ahead of time if they are interested in competing, you can
decide to compete at the last minute.
The top two finishers in each
contest will represent the Club at the Area 22 contest
(details elsewhere in this newsletter). We wish all our contestants
good luck!

We are pleased to welcome another new
member to Mississauga Valley, SHARON KEOWN. Sharon was one of the
many guests who have visited our club in the past few
weeks.
Speaking of guests, in the past 3 meetings (Feb. 3, 10 and 17)
we've had a total of 15 guests! That's quite the achievement. Many
of our guests find us from the club's website on the internet, after
having heard good things by word of mouth about Toastmasters and
then surfing the web to find a club in their community.
Our
Club's first ever Open House was held recently on the night of
February 3. Former member SHIRLEY REAY came to visit and gave an
inspiring speech about how she earned her Distinguished Toastmaster
(DTM) level. Other speakers were ERIC MATTO and BRIAN DAVIES. While
we didn't have as many guests out that night as we would have liked,
this meeting was a good reminder about the importance of
communications and how Toaostmasters has benefitted us
all.
On February 10 our meeting theme was "Valentine's Day". Members
were encouraged to wear red at this meeting. Chair LINDA KANE
brought a lot of decorations to help dress up the meeting, gave each
member a Valentine card, and also dressed the part (as you can see
in the photo).
We have an update on our club home
situation. As most of you know, our meetings were moved to
Mississauga City Hall from our usual meeting location at
Burnhamthorpe Community Centre in April 2003 while the
community centre underwent some major renovations. We
have been advised by the City of Mississauga
that Burnhamthorpe CC will be ready for occupancy in
July of this year. As the time gets closer and they give
us a definite date for moving back, we'll let everyone know the
details.
Have you done something worthy of
note? Would you like to share the news with your fellow club
members? If yes, please let the Editor know and we'll get it in our
next issue. Thanks.
ERIC MATTO visited two
other Mississauga clubs recently. He went to Trillium to act as
a judge in their "toasting" contest, and gave a contest judging
workshop at the invitation of the Confidently Speaking club.
Speaking at other clubs is a good way to expand your skills and get
out of your comfort zone. Eric is also scheduled to be a guest
speaker at the Hershaw club in Brampton in April.

the Club - Around the Area, Division,

Mississauga Toastmasters was well represented
at the Feb. 22 District-sponsored club officer training session in
Brampton. In attendance were President CAROL CROUSE, VP Education
EVELIN DEMELLO, VP Membership WINSTON ALLEN, VP Public Relations
ERIC MATTO, and Treasurer BRIAN DAVIES. Our club benefits from
having trained officers, and the officers benefit personally as
well.
There are a couple of local speech
contests that members and guests are encouraged to attend. The Area
22 Evaluation and International Speech Contests will be taking place
on the evening of Friday March 5, starting at 7:00pm. Our club is
part of Area 22, along with Port Credit, Sheridan Park and Trillium,
and we will be sending our contestants to compete against the best
from these clubs. The Area 22 winners will go on to compete against
the other Area winners in Division P on Friday April 2, also
starting at 7:00pm. Both the Area 22 and Division P contests will be
held at the RJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St. at
Matheson, in Mississauga; in each case there is a cost of $10 to
attend.
Our Division P contest winners will
be competing against the other Divisions in District 60 during the
District 60 Toastmasters Spring 2004 conference, to be held on
April 23-25 at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel Toronto
Airport. There is much more to this conference than just these
contests. Keynote speakers include TED CORCORAN, 2003-04 President
of Toastmasters International, and JIM KEY, 2003 World Champion of
Public Speaking. There will be also be several interesting
educational workshops. Watch for registration information to
be sent with the next issue of the District newsletter "Spirit
of 60". As well, you can find information on this conference at http://d60springconf2004.tripod.com/.
