Editor's Note

How important is Toastmasters training to success in business? I recently had a job interview that lasted one and a half hours in total, broken up into three half hour segments with three different individuals. Think of this as one REALLY long Table Topics session, with me answering ALL the questions! I thought I did well in the interview, speaking with confidence. I'm sure they were considering several equally qualified people, but I thought that many years of giving Table Topics at Toastmaster meetings gave me an edge.

Was I right? Less than a week after the interview I heard that the company was going to make me an offer, and on March 15 I started my new job with TD Bank Financial Group. It just goes to show the difference that Toastmasters can make!

From a New Member

Here is some feedback we received from DONNAMARIA DECAIRES, a guest who became our newest member on March 23.
As a guest, I was here for 3 reasons,
  1. to develop new skills and enhance my speaking abilities in a place where I would receive relevant evaluations,
  2. As a Human Resources Practitioner, I was touched and encouraged at the warm welcome of everyone,
  3. and I especially liked and had not been in an atmosphere that was so supportive and encouraging for a long time.
I am proud to be a new member, in fact I immediately affixed my pin to my lapel after induction. I look forward to participating and learning over the next months and volunteered to attempt the task of presenting Humour at next week's meeting. Additionally, if there is anything I can offer as a volunteer to the club I would be happy to do so.
Thanks very much, Donnamaria! Your words inspire us all.

Message from the President

Believers and Achievers!!!
That is what we are!  As long as we believe, we will achieve!

My message this month is focusing on reaching goals, moving up, getting out of the comfort zone!!!

I am so happy to see so many new members. Not only is our club is growing in numbers, but also in enthusiasm and energy. I want to encourage all of you to get involved quickly and take roles in the meetings, as well as working on your speeches. TOASTMASTERS LIKE TO TALK! TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK! YOU ARE A TOASTMASTER!

We all have our reasons for joining Toastmasters and personal goals to fulfill. Toastmasters offers many opportunities to increase leadership skills. Soon, we will be starting a new year of Toastmasters (July 1/04) and a new Executive must be found. Being on the Executive gives you an opportunity to take part in the running of the club, work on your leadership skills, and accomplish things you never knew you could do. Consider taking on an executive role! Remember, as long as you BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE!

MISSISSAUGA VALLEY TOASTMASTERS CLUB is the best!  WE ARE BEST BECAUSE YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

2003-04 President, Mississauga Valley Toastmasters

Speech Contest Results

Mississauga Valley Toastmasters held its 2004 Evaluation and International Speech contests on February 24. Competing in the Evaluation Contest were BRIAN DAVIES, EVELIN DEMELLO, LINDA KANE and MEG MOCHIZUKI. The International Speech Contest saw speeches from MIRKO MANOJLOVIC, BRIAN DAVIES and PETER MACKLE. We had several visitors from other Mississauga clubs in attendance, including our special guest SAFAR ALI from Port Credit Toastmasters who was the target speaker for our Evaluation contest.

The results were as follows:

Peter & BrianClub International Speech Contest
Firsts Place: BRIAN DAVIES (right)
Second Place: PETER MACKLE (left)

Brian and Meg
Club Evaluation Contest
First Place: MEG MOCHIZUKI (right)
Second Place: BRIAN DAVIES (left)

The first and second place winners in each contest were eligible to move on to the Area 22 contest, which was held on the night of March 5. BRIAN DAVIES and MEG MOCHIZUKI represented Mississauga Valley at this next level of competition, and while they didn't place among the top finishers they should be congratulated for participating and stepping outside their comfort levels as speakers.

All members are encouraged to participate in speech contests as a way to jumpstart their development as speakers. The next round of club contests will be in the fall when we have our Humourous Speech and Table Topics contests.

Walking with Toastmasters

Here's an invitation from JOE VANDERKOOI:

WalkingI really enjoy a good walk, particularly in a nice peaceful natural environment. A few summers ago, I started a regular walk on Sunday mornings, but since it is more fun to share this walk with friends, I asked Carol to join me, as she also enjoys a good walk. The walk starts at my place, and eventually takes us through the Credit Valley, and ends back at my place. There are also places to take alternate routes, so the walk can be anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Over the months, numerous other Toastmasters have also joined in the walk, such as Evelin, Tam and Meg. This summer, we plan to walk again, and all walkers are welcome. Anyone who would like to join in from time to time, let me know anytime at ulbe@sympatico.ca.

Club News

In the month since our last newsletter we have had FIVE new members join our club! Let's give a warm and hearty welcome to CARLA INOQUE, VIRGINIA (GINNY) SOMERSALL, JEFFERY WANG, PETER KIMANDO and DONNAMARIA DECAIRES! Some of our more veteran members may remember Ginny, as she is returning to the club after a 3-year absence during which she took time to pursue a nursing career. We look forward to Icebreaker speeches from our new members, so that we can learn more about them as well as see them get started on their journey of self-improvement.

Nothing new to report on the club moving back to Burnhamthorpe Community Centre after the renovations are completed there, probably in July. An interesting suggestion has been made - that we stay at City Hall for the long run. What do you think of this? If you have an opinion on this matter, let your club Executive know. We don't know if this is even possible, but if enough members want it then I'm sure that option will be explored further. Stay tuned.

Member News

ROSEMARY BRKOPAC has been appointed as the 2004-05 Editor for the District 60 newsletter "Spirit of 60". No doubt she was noticed for the award-winning work she did as our club's newsletter Editor from 2001 to 2003, and now she'll be seen by a much wider audience. Congratulations Rosemary! Rosemary has been absent from our club meetings for the past few months due to personal reasons, but she hopes to start attending regularly again very soon.

ERIC MATTO will be presenting a workshop, "Untangling the Web: Internet Resources for Toastmasters", at the upcoming District 60 spring conference (see conference details in next section). As well, he will be giving the same workshop a week later at District 30's conference in Chicago and in June at the Region V conference in Milwaukee!

Beyond the Club - Around the Area, Division, District

The Division P Evaluation and International Speech Contests will be held on Friday, April 2, starting at 7:00pm. The location is the HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St. at the corner of Matheson Blvd. in Mississauga. The admission charge is $10, which covers the contest expenses and includes refreshments. Come out and see some really excellent speakers as they try to advance to the District level contests.

Our Division P contest winners will be competing against the other Divisions in the District during the District 60 Toastmasters Spring 2004 conference, to be held on the April 23-25 weekend at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel Toronto Airport. There is much more to this conference than just these contests. Keynote speakers include TED CORCORAN, 2003-04 President of Toastmasters International, and JIM KEY, 2003 World Champion of Public Speaking. There will be also be many interesting educational workshops, and the election of District officers for the 2004-05 year. Registration information will be sent with the next issue of the District newsletter "Spirit of 60", expected any day now.
