Editor's Note

I'm not normally a fan of reality TV shows, but I have been hooked on NBC's "The Apprentice" from day 1. If you haven't seen this show, the premise is that 16 people are vying for a job as an apprentice working for multi-millionaire Donald Trump as the CEO of one of his companies. Each week, one candidate is dropped by Donald's now famous uttering of the phrase "You're Fired".

What interests me about this show is the way that the candidates are being judged on their leadership skills. They are divided into two teams, and each week they are given a task in which the results will be judged and compared between the two teams. A team's success or failure has a lot to do with its leader.

Most of us will never work for Donald Trump, but leadership skills are just as vital to our success. One of the ways that we can develop these skills in Toastmasters is by taking on a club officer role. Training and support are provided, and while there is work involved the rewards are great. Not only will you become a better person, but you'll help to contribute to the success of our club and its members.

Club Officer Elections

May 4 is the date of our election of Club Officers for the 2004-05 year. Officer positions to be elected for a one-year term beginning July 1 are: President, Vice-President Education, Vice-President Membership, Vice-President Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant-at-Arms. Training will be provided by the District in the June-August period. Over the past few club meetings, we have had lessons from each of our current officers explaining the responsibilities of each position.

Consider taking on a leadership role in the club. Toastmasters is about Communications and Leadership; in much the same way as we learn to become better speakers by doing, so too do we learn to become better leaders by doing. A term as a club officer is the major requirement for achieving the CL (Competent Leader) designation in Toastmsaters.

JOE VANDERKOOI is this year's nominations chair for the club. Let him know if you are interested in this avenue of personal growth.

District 60 Conference

District 60's Spring 2004 Conference was held on the weekend of April 23-25 at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel on the Toronto airport strip. Hundreds of Toastmasters from across Ontario and beyond gathered together for educational workshops, the District business meeting with elections of 2004-05 District officers, the District International and Evaluation speech contests, and some fun as well. Mississauga Valley's ERIC MATTO and MARILYN COCHRANE attended the entire conference, and MIRKO MANOJLOVIC was there for part of it. Both Eric and Marilyn served on the conference organizing committee, and Eric was also one of the workshop presenters.

Mirko
Last year MIRKO MANOJLOVIC received his DTM (Distinguished Toastmasters level, our highest award), but he was unable to attend the fall conference to receive recognition from the District. Mirko was able to attend this time, and he received his DTM medallion from District 60 Governor JEAN MCALLISTER and Toastmasters International President TED CORCORAN. This was a very special honour for Mirko since the International President only visits a District once every 7-8 years.                             L to R: Mirko, Jean, Ted

A few former members of Mississauga Valley Toastmasters were in attendance at this conference as well: JOAN BINETTI, who was elected as District 60 Governor for 2004-05; BETTY MONTGOMERY, who was the conference chair; NINA FERNANDES, who served on the conference committee; and finally Past International Director CHRIS FORD (who now lives in District 61 in Ottawa) who is a candidate for Third Vice-President of Toastmasters International. It seems that Mississauga Valley is a club that builds leaders in Toastmasters!

If you missed this conference, don't worry. The next conference will be in the fall, from November 12-14, 2004 at Toronto's Inn on the Park Hotel.

New C&L Manual

Toastmasters International started sending a new Communications and Leadership manual to new members a few months ago, and some of the speeches are different!

This may be confusing, since some members are still working from the old manual while newer members have the new manual. Here's a summary of the differences between the two manuals:

#  Old manual                New manual
 1  Icebreaker                No change
 2  Sincerity                  Organize
3  Organize                  Get to the point (was Sincerity)
4  Body movement         How to say it (was Work with words)
5  Vocal variety            Your body speaks
6  Work with words        Vocal variety
7  Apply your skills         Research your topic (same speech)
 8  Visual aids                No change
 9  Persuasion                No change
10  Inspire                    No change

Essentially, #2 and #3 were swapped, and within #4, #5 and #6, "Work with
words" was moved before body language and vocal variety.

For more on the new manual, see the March 2004 Toastmaster magazine (pages 9-11) for an outline of each project.

Icebreakers

a different kind of icebreakerNo, not the boats, the speeches - as in the first speech of the Basic C&L manual, the first speech that everyone gives when they first join Toastmasters. You know the one - introduce yourself to the club as well as to public speaking, in 4 to 6 minutes.

An icebreaker (the boat) breaks through the obstacle of ice to get to its destination. An icebreaker (the speech) breaks through the obstacle of fear so that the speaker can get to his or goal of improved communications and leadership skills.

At Mississauga Valley we have had 5 icebreaker speeches in the past few weeks, from SHARON KEOWN, PETER KIMANDO, ALEX VON DONAT, CARLA INOQUE and DONNAMARIA DECAIRES. In those speeches, we found out some interesting facts about our newest members. We learned that Sharon likes to travel; Peter grew up in Kenya; Alex is a widower raising two teenage children; Carla was inspired to succeed in her goal of becoming a chiropractor by her parents and a couple of teachers; Donnamaria ("the Portuguese goddess") has visited 30 countries and had 21 different employers in her life.

We are pleased to welcome three more new members to our club:  HUGH DOUGLAS, JACKSON KUNG'U and GRANT FISHER. Welcome, gentlemen! It has been a great year for new members at Mississauga Valley, and there are still over 2 months to go before the end of the club year.

Member News

ERIC MATTO is planning to do some more speaking engagements outside of our club. He has been invited to be a guest speaker at Brampton's Hershaw club, the District 30 Spring 2004 Conference in Chicago (his former District, where he served as District Governor in 2001-02), and the Region V Conference in Milwaukee.

Beyond the Club - Around the Area, Division, District

A report on the recent District 60 Spring 2004 Conference is elsewhere in this newsletter. Here are a couple more items of interest to our club. TIM FUCHS of our sister club Trillium finished second in the District International Speech Contest. Another club in our Area, Port Credit TM, also did well in the contests with SAFAR ALI winning 3rd place in the Evaluation Contest. MICHAEL JOHNSON was elected as the new Division P Governor, taking over from ROSELYN BROWN as of July 1.

Speaking of Roselyn, she was recently interviewed on the Rogers Cable 10 Mississauga program "Dufferin-Peel Living" talking about Toastmasters. Who knows, maybe our club will get some more guests as a result of this exposure.
