Editor's Note

Thanks to everyone who gave us such warm compliments after our first July issue!

In this month's issue there are a couple of important items: one is about the club dues and the other about the upcoming Humourous Speech and Table Topics Contests.

I had the privilege of attending the Toastmasters International Convention last weekend in Atlanta. What a great experience! Every Toastmaster should try to attend this event at least once.

Our Club Honoured in Atlanta

ROSEMARY BRKOPAC, last year's VP Public Relations and Editor of "Voice of the Valley", has just returned from the Toastmasters International Convention in Atlanta. While there she received our Top Ten Newsletter Award from GAVIN BLAKEY, 2002-03 President of Toastmasters International, in front of hundreds of people at the Hall of Fame ceremony (pictured here).Gavin Blakey & Rosemary Brkopac

As well, we have just learned of another honour for Rosemary and Mississauga Valley Toastmasters. "Voice of the Valley" has been announced as the winner of the 2002-03 District 60 Bulletin of the Year Award. Sort of makes sense that one of the top ten newsletters in the world be recognized as the best in the District. This award will be presented to Rosemary at the upcoming Fall Conference in Huntsville.

Once again, congratulations Rosemary ! ! ! Mississauga Valley Toastmasters is proud of your accomplishments!

From the President

Fellow Toastmasters, we are moving towards September and vacations will be over, so now we need to set our personal goals for the coming year and work towards them.  Evelin and I will be contacting you to find out what you are planning on for the year, and how we as an executive and as a club can help you reach your goals.  We will all be happy to help you in any way we can!

This month we saw YICHAO CHEN attain her CTM.  She worked very hard to finish this goal before moving to Houston, Texas on August 15. Our first CTM for the year, and this is one of the points we need for the Distinguished Club status.

In a few weeks, we will be having our Humourous Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest -- these are fun contests to be in -- if you would like to be a participant, please let us know as soon as possible.  I'd love to see at least 6 contestants!  I have heard a lot of humour from many people during our table topics--you all have the potential to do a humourous speech!

Before you know it, it will be September, and we ask that everyone pay their
annual dues before the last meeting in September, as they must be submitted to
Toastmasters International on time.  It too counts towards  our Distinguished Club status.

I am working with Sheridan Park Toastmasters to try to have some interaction with them by way of debate and exchange of speakers.  I did a speech there on August 13, and it is a good way to prepare yourself for a speech contest, as others see you differently than the members of your home club who are used to you and "know" what to expect.  It is a good learning experience.  I have a member of another club who has expressed a desire to speak at our club as well.

Our Executive meets on August 27, and by then we will have firm plans in place for the coming year!

Carol Crouse, President -
"Believe and Achieve"

Club Treasurer BRIAN DAVIES wants to remind everyone that it's that time of the year again, time to collect dues. Please make your cheques out to "Mississauga Valley Toastmasters". Annual dues are $155 and cover the period from October 1, 2003 through to September 30, 2004. Brian advises that he will also accept half year dues of $77.50 which will cover up to March 31, 2004 but that means that he'll be collecting the second installment from you in March of next year. Please bring your cheque to a club meeting before the end of September.

YICHAO CHEN has completed the 10 speeches of the Basic Communication & Leadership manual and has earned her Competent Toastmaster (CTM) designation. Congratulations Yichao! As you read last month, Yichao has moved to Houston to attend school. She finished her last 2 speeches in front of a Toastmasters audience at JOE VANDERKOOI's backyard on a Sunday morning following a hike!

Our Club was well-represented at the 2003 Toastmasters International Convention which was held last weekend. PHIL TAYLOR, ROSEMARY BRKOPAC and ERIC MATTO were present for all the excitement in Atlanta, Georgia. We'll have some impressions of the Atlanta Convention from them in next month's newsletter as well as some pictures.
